Teimosia e recordes Stubbornness and records Vindo rodopiando do Sul, uma densa frente de nuvens aproximava-se do centro de Portugal, ameaçando tapar o céu por completo antes do cair da noite. Contrariando a sabedoria e os usos, mais de uma dúzia de astrónomos amadores considerou o facto de haver noite, argumento suficiente para levar os seus telescópios até à Atalaia. E assim se juntaram graúdos e miúdos...ou melhor, só miúdas, por baixo de uma densa neblina celeste no vasta campo de pastagens de estrelas. Obviamente, o céu manteve a sua promessa, e uma lua entre nuvens iluminava difuso as ervas, o solo, umas poucas árvores e um amontoado de gente, conversando animadamente como se estivessem num bar ou restaurante e não num campo bravo longe de tudo. A teimosia surtiu efeito, pois por aqui e por ali, apareciam abertas deixando vistas bem limpas e livres de turbulência para a Lua, ou a nebulosa de Orionte com o Trapézio de 6 estrelas notável em quase todos os instrumentos, ou Saturno calmamente subindo no horizonte Leste. É impressionante como basicamente apenas 3 objectos podem entreter tanta gente e tantos telescópios. Pela primeira vez este ano, e bem escolhido para esta noite, havia uma forte presença de telescópios Maksutov, que asseguravam as melhores imagens da noite, embora os APOs somente ficassem para trás por causa da sua falta de abertura. Pelas 4 da manhã uma densa neblina rolou terreno adentro, quase não deixando ver a palma da mão àfrente dos olhos. Era nesta altura, com toda gente a arrumar o equipamento, que o último instrumento em pé, o Obsession de 15" do Alberto, contorcendo as leis físicas, teóricas, e os limites ópticos postulados nos livros do género, projectou a melhor imagem planetária do ano. Saturno à 1000 vezes...limpinho, bem contrastado, sem turbulência, grande como uma abóbora, e com a divisão de Encke (não a mínima) suficientemente grande para enfiar uma carta postal dando a volta em torno do anel A. Memorável. Grom Momentos altos: 21:00 h - Luís Carreira: Não existem sugestões de melhoramento para as montagens Takahashi porque eles são perfeitos por defeito. 22:00 h - Intes Micro M715: As longas sombras pontiagudas da parede em torno da cratera Plato vistos a 380 vezes. Assombroso 23.00 h - STF-Mak 7": Montes Spitzbergen, parecia uma dentadura de gigante deixada na paisagem. 24:00 h - Apo TMB 130 do Rui: Saturno à 400 vezes e ainda tudo quase perfeito. 1.00 h - Os anéis de difracção excêntricos gritando por uma colimação no Mak OMC do Jorge Canelhas. Jorge: "Deixa-me ver o que estou suposto ver...não vejo nada". ...silêncio longo...mais silêncio.... "Aaaaaaaah, já percebi....por hoje chega, nisso já não mexo mais" 2.00 h - Apo TMB 130 e Mak M715: 6 pontos estelares saltam para a vista como se fossem as Plêiades num binóculo. 3.00 h - Apo Taka-Sky90: Saturno a grande amplificação e a imagem não queria quebrar, fantástico para tão pouca abertura. O duo dinâmico (João e José): Mesa nocturna de café e chá, e bolachas de qualidade e em quantidade para alimentar uma legião. 4.00 h - Obsession 15" do Alberto: Saturno a 1000 vezes...mais detalhe só nas imagens da sonda Cassini. 5.00 h - Luís Carreira na tertúlia pós-observação "Os Takahashi's são o melhor que há. (Ele não desiste) Approaching from the south, a dense cloud cover threatened to close the sky in Portugal's central parts before nightfall. Against common knowledge and habit, more than a dozen amateur astronomers considered the fact that it will be night, reason enough to drag their scopes to Atalaia. And so, adults and kids joined underneath a clouded sky in the vast fields of star grazing. Obviously, the sky kept its promises and the moon dropped his diffuse light through clouds, illuminating a few plants, the ground, some trees and a minor crowd of people in an animated discussion as if they were in a bar or in a restaurant, not in an open field, far from anything. The stubbornness had its effect, and here and there the clouds opened, allowing for nice, clean and turbulence free views to the moon, Orion Nebula with its 6 star Trapezium evidenced clearly in most scopes and Saturn, slowly rising above the eastern horizon. It's somehow impressive, how just 3 objects can entertain so many people and so many telescopes. For the first time this year, and well chosen, Maksutov telescopes had their strong presence and assured the best images, although the APOs only were behind because of their lack in aperture. At 4 UT in the morning a dense fog rolled in, such that it was mostly impossible to see the hands in front of the eyes. It was in this moment, whilst everybody busy dismounting telescopes, the only instrument still standing, Alberto's 15" Obsession, bending the laws and theories of physics, and optical limits postulated in expert books, projected the best planetary image of the year. Saturn at 1000 times…. clean, well contrasted, no turbulence, big as a pumpkin and the division of Encke (not the minimum) around ring A, large enough to slip a postcard in between. Memorable. Grom Highlights: 21:00h – Luis Carreira: There are no sugestions for upgrades of Tahahashi mounts because they are perfect by default. 22:00h – Intes Micro 715: the long sharp-pointed shadows along the walls of Plato seen at 380x. Astonishing! 23:00h – STF Mak 7” – Hills Spitzbergen looked like a giant’s denture left on the landscape. 24:00h – Rui’s APO TMB 130 : Saturn at 400x and yet everything almost perfect. 01:00h – Excentric diffraction rings crying for a collimation in the MAC OMC of Jorge Canelhas. Jorge:”Let me have a look at what I am supposed to see…I see nothing at all”....…long silence…but silence….”Aaaaaaaaah, I understood, ………..enough for today, I won’t touch that thing anymore.” 02:00h – APO TMB 130 and Mak M715: 6 pointlike stars strike the eyes like the Pleiades would in binoculars. 03:00h – APO Taka-Sky90: Saturn at high amplification and the image stood still; fantastic for so low aperture. The “Dynamic Duo” (João and José) set a night table with coffe, tea and excellent cakes, in quantities able to feed a legion. 04:00h – Alberto’s 15” Obsession: Saturn at 1.000x…more detail only in the images from the Cassini. 05:00h – Luis Carreira at the social gathering post-observation: “Takahashis are the best stuff”. (He does not give up).
