No S. Martinho... In St. Martin's day... No S. Martinho, castanhas e vinho...e astronomia. Para começar, houve um repasto na Atalaia, no fim do qual fomos brindados com castanhas assadas e agua-pé. Depois foi o habitual encontro. A chegada foi pelas 21:30 e já lá se encontrava o Francisco e um casal. Do grupo, além de mim, estiveram o José Ribeiro, o João Gregório e o Henrique. Várias presenças, algumas habituais como o Luís Campos, fizeram com que o local tivesse uma muito razoável ocupação. Mas esteve lá, e não foi a primeira vez, um Sr. chamado António Alves que na sua página já faz referência, e até tem uma fotografia da Atalaia referindo o espírito do grupo - http://astroceu.tripod.com/ Esteve em animada conversa, sobretudo com o Francisco e manteve-se lá quase até ao fim. A noite estava muito húmida, mas havia pouca turbulência.Pela minha parte comecei por fazer uma exploração das galáxias em Baleia (CETUS), tendo limitado a busca a magnitude 12. Isto antes do nascer da Lua. Já com a Lua, foi a inevitável M42. De início só com dificuldade via a 6ª estrela do Trapézio, mas, mais tarde, tornou-se um alvo fácil. A pedido fiz uma visita a vários enxames em Auriga. Fui observar a nebulosa planetária NGC1514, em TOURO. Com uma estrela central muito brilhante, só com OIII o halo era visível, não sendo homogéneo em toda a extensão. O João Gregório esteve a captar a imagem em OIII e o que vi na imagem confirmou a impressão visual. De seguida foi a LUA. Consegui imagens muito nítidas e estáveis. Já para o fim da noite foi a vez de Saturno. Interessante o plano dos anéis, havendo como uma fina linha escura na parte mais próxima e vendo-se bem uma banda a uns 20º de latitude sul. Quanto a satélites, além de Titan, viam-se, de um dos lados, Dione, Tétis e Mimas; do outro lado dos anéis, Encéladus, e a norte, Réa. O José Ribeiro esteve a fazer mais uns espectros de M42, passando depois para a Lua, tendo registado espectros em várias frequências. Estou certo que nos irá mostrar algo do trabalho desta noite. Terminámos pelas 04:00 com a tradicional ida à bomba para refrescar. Alberto In St Martin's day, chestnuts and wine...and astronomy. We started with a meal at the village of Atalaia. At the end, the owners of the restaurant offered us chestnuts and small wine. Then it was the usual meeting. We arrived by 21:30 and we met there Francisco and two other people. From our group the attendants were Alberto, José Ribeiro, João Gregório and Henrique. Later arrived a reasonable number of people with some recurrent presences like that of Luís Campos. Another name was António Alves. He has been there before and reported that in his website http://astroceu.tripod.com/ even including a photo of the place. He held a lively conversation, mainly with Francisco, and stood almost to the end. The night was very humid, but very stable. As for me, I started with a tour in the galaxies of CETUS, limitting the search to magnitude 12. I did that before moonrise. With the moon I pointed to M42. At first I could hardly see the 6th star in the Trapezium. Later it became a very easy sighting. By someone request I made a tour through the AURIGA clusters. Then I observed NGC1514, a planetary nebula in TAURUS. With a bright central star, the halo is hardly seen. But with a OIII filter, a large halo, with darker and brighter areas, is easily observed. João Gregório captured it in the OIII band and his image confirmed my visual impression. Then it was the Moon. It offered very clear and steady images. To finish the night... Saturn. Very interesting the plan of the rings; it looked like if there was a dim black line on the edge and a band at about 20º south latitude. We spotted Titan and, closer to the rings, in one side, Dione, Thetys and Mimas; on the other side, Encelladus; and, to the north, Rhea. José Ribeiro captured some spectres of selected areas of M42, changing later to the Moon from which he took spectres in various frequencies. For sure he will offer us some of his scientific work. We departed by 04:00 , with the usual stop at the motorway service area for some talking and for a refreshing drink. Alberto
