Lama Grande - Montesinho

E valeu a pena.

The 1st October, saturday night, after a magnificent dinner, at Gimonde, that ended a little bit late, a long caravan headed to a point, 1400 meters high, in the heart of Montesinho natural reserve park, arriving past midnight.
The road, with 6 miles in bare earth, was not the best – to say the least – and, the day after, it was easy to identify the cars of the attendants by the amount of powder carried along. They became really dirty.
At the place we found out that there was a row of houses and some tall trees, leaving a glade where from it was impossible to observe near the horizon.
But everyone found a place, be it in the glade, be it near the road, a few hundred meters away.
And it was worth the effort. The SQM (Sky Quality Meter) of Luís Carreira read 21,40, corresponding to a magnitude of 7, or slightly above.
It was cold and moist.
I don’t know if someone captured images. But a few of us engaged in visual observation through the Obsession. From the objects observed I point out the Horsehead nebula (Panoptic 22mm and h-beta filter) very easily spotted; the Keyhole Nebula well defined through a powermate 2.5x and a 12mm Nagler; the Stephen’s Quintet with the five elements; the unavoidable Veil Nebula, glamorous with a 31mm nagler and an UHC filter; the Hubble’s Variable Nebula; the Rosette Nebula like never seen before etc.
We would like to have enjoyed a longer night, but we arrived too late.
But this sky is, beyond any doubt, one of the best in Portugal.
