Eclipse Anular Annular eclipse Bragança, dia 3 de Outubro de 2005, vai ficar na memória de todos os que tiveram a felicidade de estar presentes. E não só pelo dia 3 e pelo eclipse anular do Sol. Quase todos chegámos no sábado, dia 1. Reunimos para um jantar que terminou bastante tarde e rumámos a um ponto, a 1400 metros de altitude, no parque do Montesinho, para uma observação nocturna. Domingo, foi dia para dormir um pouco durante a manhã e para visitar o local proposto para observação do eclipse, no santuário de S. Bartolomeu, próximo de Argozelo. O local era excelente e muitos optaram por ele. Outros, temendo não ter a privacidade necessária devido à presença de muita gente e dos meios de comunicação social, fomos à procura de outros locais, fazendo uso de uma tabela produzida pelo "Bureau des Longitudes". Acabámos por encontrar um local de acesso fácil, com excelente enquadramento, e em plena linha de centralidade, num ponto entre Valverde e Paredes. O ECLIPSE EM VALVERDE / PAREDES No dia 3, chegámos ao local pelas 06:30. Deu tempo para montar e alinhar os equipamentos ainda de noite. E ficámos a aguardar o nascer do Sol, sob um céu límpido e sem nuvens. Assistimos aos primeiros raios a iluminarem o topo de uns montes a oeste e, depois, à descida gradual da zona iluminada pela encosta, à progressão pelo vale e, por fim, pudemos testemunhar o avanço daquela linha noite/dia na nossa direcção, primeiro a umas centenas de metros, depois a poucos metros, e, finalmente a ultrapassar-nos. Na pureza daquela manhã foi um momento magnífico a pressagiar o que se iria passar. Antes do primeiro contacto tivemos tempo para observar o Sol com toda a variedade de filtros. Não tinha qualquer mancha, mas tinha muitas protuberâncias e de tamanho bastante grande. Ao aproximar-se o 1º contacto, uma das protuberâncias começou a ser engolida pela sombra. Depois foi o avanço gradual da Lua sobre o disco solar. Foi notória a diminuição da luminosidade. Os verdes da vegetação ficaram mais mortiços; perderam brilho; a temperatura baixou significativamente obrigando-nos a voltar a vestir os casacões que entretanto já despíramos. O 2º contacto foi algo irreal. A protuberância que fora tapada antes do 1º contacto, surgiu agora no meio do escuro, como uma tocha. Foi uma imagem inesquecível, aquela língua de Sol ainda a descoberto e, do lado oposto, no meio de nada, uma espécie de chama. Simplesmente fantástico. De seguida foi o 2º contacto e o curto espaço de 4m5,9 segundos, com a Lua centrada, como um desenho feito a compasso, numa coroa de luz. O que todos os presentes sentiram e manifestaram foi uma sensação de felicidade por ter tido o privilégio de poder observar, no lugar certo, com um tempo ideal, um fenómeno tão raro. Do próprio local foi aberto um encontro e colocada uma imagem do momento da anularidade perfeita. A mesma imagem foi também enviada para a Sky&Telescope, sendo de imediato publicada. Entretanto chegavam notícias de que em Argozelo o evento era um sucesso, com uma verdadeira multidão e com transmissões em directo pela televisão. Ficámos radiantes por saber que o esforço e o empenho dos organizadores fora recompensado. E terão, por certo, o reconhecimento de todos os que por lá passaram e tiveram a oportunidade de olhar por um telescópio ou binóculo, de ouvir uma explicação, ou simplesmente de lá estar, no lugar certo, devido à sua iniciativa. 3 de Outubro de 2005, dia de um soberbo eclipse anular do sol, fica na nossa memória como uma data especial. Alberto O ECLIPSE EM ARGOZELO O outro grupo dirigiu-se para o Santuário de S. Bartolomeu onde se encontrava o ponto de convergência popular para assistir ao eclipse. O local escolhido foi uma pequena clareira ao lado do Santuário de forma a termos alguma privacidade face à multidão que se encontrava a menos de 50 metros. Chegámos bastante cedo ao local, e ao contrário dos dias anteriores, o frio era bastante notório o que obrigou a um suplemento de agasalhos não muito habituais para o tempo quente deste ano. Com o nascente desobstruído tivemos ainda a sorte de ficarmos com vista para um pequeno prado onde pastavam algumas vacas e um burro guardadas por dois pastores (um homem e um cão). Tínhamos assim a oportunidade de aferir se o comportamento dos animais registaria alguma alteração ao longo do fenómeno. E por coincidência ou não, a verdade é que foi notório um abrandamento da actividade dos bichos à medida que o eclipse progredia. Verificámos que existe ainda um desconhecimento total por parte de alguns habitantes quanto ao perigo de observar um eclipse à vista desarmada. O pastor em determinado momento, apercebendo-se que alguma coisa não estava bem não só pela evidente quebra da luminosidade ambiente mas também pelas manifestações de emoção dos vizinhos (provavelmente nem sabia que havia um eclipse nesse dia), tentou repetidamente olhar directamente para o sol tentando perceber o que se estava a passar. Felizmente, alguém lhe emprestou uns óculos para que este pudesse observar o sol em segurança. A reacção dele foi no entanto estranha. Quando finalmente se apercebeu que o sol estava estranho, não quis mais olhar para "aquilo". A observação das sombras fez parte do plano de observação e alguns efeitos engraçados foram registados. Aliás, o fenómeno foi acompanhado com bastante emoção e alegria por parte dos presentes. Com vários telescópios á disposição, aproveitámos para observar a progressão do eclipse com diferentes amplificações e diferentes filtros. Por fim, arrumámos os equipamentos e regressámos a casa com "um sorriso de orelha a orelha" estampado no rosto. Most of us came to the place on Saturday, 1st October. We met for a dinner that ended quite late and headed to a point, 1400 meters high, in the natural reserve park of Montesinho, for a nightly observation. Sunday we had some rest during the morning and then visited the proposed place for the eclipse, at the sanctuary of St Bartholomew, near Argozelo. The place was perfect and many opted for it. Some others, thinking that it should be difficult to have the necessary privacy, due to the presence of so many people and of a large number of media, including TV networks, searched for other places, using a table from the “Bureau des Longitudes” and came up to find a perfect place, easily accessible, just over the track of centrality, somewhere between Valverde and Paredes. THE ECLIPSE AT VALVERDE / PAREDES The 3rd October we came to the place by 06:30 local. The equipments were aligned still during the night time. Then we waited for the sunrise, under a pristine cloudless sky. We saw the first rays of the sun touching the tops of some hills to the west, and then we watched the gradual descent down the hills of the lighted area; we could testify the advance of the night/day line in our direction, a few hundred meters away at first, then at a short distance, and finally overtaking us. This was an wonderful moment, foretelling what was to come. Before the 1st contact, we had time to watch the sun through several filters. There was no dark spot at all, but there were a lot of prominences visible through the h-alfa filters. Just short of the 1st contact one of the prominences began to be eclipsed. Then it was the gradual advance of the Moon over the solar disc. It was noticeable the decrease in luminosity. The greens in the landscape turned pale, spiritless; the temperature dropped significantly forcing us to put on again the overcoats. The 2nd contact was something unreal. The prominence that had disappeared before the 1st contact, rose now in full darkness, like a burning torch. It was an unforgettable image, that neck of sun still uncovered and, the opposite side, in the middle of nothing, a kind of flame. Simply fantastic. The 2nd contact came soon and it was the time of annularity, during a short period of 4m5,9 seconds, with the Moon centered, like a geometrical design, in a crown of light. All the attendants felt and showed a feeling of happiness for having the privilege to watch, at the right place, under the ideal weather, such a rare event. At once we entered a report at www.atalaia.org , inserting an image of the perfect annularity. The same image was sent to Sky&Telescope and quickly published in the internet at http://skyandtelescope.com/news/article_1604_1.asp Just happy, we followed the rest of the eclipse up to the 4th contact. In the meanwhile the news from Argozelo told us that the event was a great success, with a large crowd and direct broadcasts by TV networks. We were happy to know that the efforts and engagement of the organizers were rewarding. They shall have, for sure, the gratitude of all those who have been there and had the chance of looking through a telescope or binocular, of listening to some explanation, or just for being there, at the right place, because of their initiative. The 3rd October of 2005, the day of a superb annular solar eclipse, shall last in our memories as a very special date. Alberto THE ECLIPSE AT ARGOZELO The other group headed to the Sanctuary of St Bartolemew, the popular meeting point for the eclipse watching. The local selected was a small glade close to the Sanctuary, located to grant some privacy from the crowd that joined less than 50 meters away. We arrived early, and, unlike the previous days, cold was noticeable, what forced us to put on cold weather garments, unusual situation for this season. Without any obstacles to the east we still had the luck of a view to a grazing field with some cows and a donkey guarded by two shepherds and a dog. So we could verify if the behaviour of the animals changed anyhow during the phoenomenon. And, coincidence or not, the truth is that it was clear a slowing in their activity with the eclipse progress. We confirmed an almost complete lack of knowledge of many people regarding the danger of naked eye observation. The shepherd, at a certain point, became aware that something was different by the evident drop in luminosity and also by the manifestations coming from the crowd. He, probably, didn't even know that there was an eclipse and looked repeatdly and directly at the sun, trying to understand what was going on. Fortunately, someone lended him eclipse glasses so that he could look safely at the sun. He had an odd reaction and, when at last he became aware that the sun looked strange, he refused to look again "at that". Looking at the shadows was part of the observation plan and we registered some funny effects. Actually the phoenomenon has been followed with joy and emotion by most of the attendants. With several telescopes at hand, we followed the progress of the eclipse through different filters and at different amplifications.
