Festa no Vale da Lama Celebration at Vale da Lama Embora todas as expedições do Grupo Atalaia se transformem numa grandiosa festa, esta foi particularmente especial. O nosso companheiro Francisco Gomes comemorava os 50 anos de idade e tinha reservado algumas surpresas para um numeroso Grupo de Amigos: Alberto, Alfonso, Alcino, Grom, Hugo, João Gregório, João Nuno, Jorge Canelhas, José Rola, Luís Carreira, Mario Santiago, Paulo Barros, Pedro Mota, e ainda a sua família. Ao cair da noite fomos brindados com uma generosa mesa de iguarias e doces que encheram de satisfação as mais exigentes fantasias gastronómicas dos presentes. Se havia quem não acreditasse na Lenda da Cornucópia, esta noite induziu uma crença profunda em todos os presentes. Tivemos ainda a oportunidade de testar o Sky Quality Meter (SQM) do Luís Carreira que registou um muito bom indicador de 20,85 no zénite. Tentaremos de futuro documentar a qualidade do céu noutros locais e quem sabe alertar os responsáveis para os crescentes problemas da poluição luminosa. Outro destaque foi uma cadeira \\\\\\\'semi-astronómica\\\\\\\' gentilmente esquecida no meio do espaço de observação e que proporcionou vistas binoculares de suster a respiração. O relato de observação abaixo transcrito é da autoria do companheiro Alberto e traduz fielmente na 1ª pessoa mais um encontro do mais activo grupo de observação astronómica em Portugal -------- - Sábado, a maior parte dos habituais frequentadores da Atalaia rumaram a Vale da Lama, Alpiarça. A intenção foi a de desfrutar de um céu relativamente despoluído, em fim de semana de Lua Nova. E valeu a pena, com um céu de magnitude 6 em toda a extensão. Chegámos cedo, ainda de dia. Com o material montado, foi a hora de um petisco que o Francisco, festejando o 50º aniversário, acompanhado das esposa e dos filhos, nos ofereceu. Depois foi uma longa noite de observação. Após uma passagem obrigatória por alguns enxames, foi a vez de tentar alguns alvos mais complicados. A Nebulosa do véu, com a Nagler 31mm e filtro UHC, estava espantosa de detalhe, tanto o segmento oeste, como o segmento leste. Mesmo o segmento central foi observado com toda a facilidade. A \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'Califórnia\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' foi mais difícil, muito menos evidente; mas conseguimos. Com a 31mm e filtro Hbeta só parcialmente ficava dentro do campo. Depois tentámos uma Clavé do Alfonso (70mm). Como não tínhamos um filtro de 2 polegadas, usámos o de 1,25 colocado frente à ocular. Obtivemos um bom resultado. A nebulosa ainda não cabia no campo mas era mais evidente. A Nebulosa da águia, com a 31mm e filtro UHC via-se distintamente. O M17 – Nebulosa do cisne – com este mesmo equipamento estava soberba, mas, com uma 22mm e filtro O-III, ganhou em contraste e em detalhe. Depois passei pelos Messiers de Aquário e dei com o Luís Carreira a explorar a constelação do Escultor. Aí me fixei também. Aqui foi a caça às galáxias. E a lista foi longa: - NGC7507, NGC7513, IC5332 (este muito ténue), NGC7713, NGC7755, NGC7793, NGC24, NGC55, NGC131, NGC134 (aqui conseguia-se ter o NGC131 no mesmo campo), NGC148, NGC150, NGC253 (a grande galáxia do Escultor a extravasar os limites da ocular), NGC254, NGC289, NGC288(enxame globular com várias dezenas de estrelas resolvidas), NGC300, NGC439, NGC491 e NGC613. De seguida, já com a Lira afastada do zénite, um bocado a oeste, virei as atenções para M57. Com amplificações de 700x, tanto eu como o Alfonso pudemos ver a estrela central por diversas vezes, por períodos relativamente curtos, mas mais longos que aqueles curtos aparecimentos mais vulgares. Por curiosidade, colocámos uma ocular de 2,5mmsobre uma powermate de 2.5. Com a focal a 4200mm, tínhamos uma amplificação de 1680x. Só ficava dentro do campo a parte interior do anel. Foi bonito de ver apesar de não muito instrutivo. E o meu grande contentamento foi o seguimento quase preciso. Entretanto já o Touro estava relativamente alto. M1 esteve melhor sem qualquer filtro, talvez por ainda estar relativamente baixa. As Pleiades foram uma das imagens da noite. Com uma das oculares Clavé do Alfonso (penso que foi a de 40mm, mas não estou certo, ficavam todas dentro do campo. Mas foi muito notória a nebulosidade em redor das estrelas, o que ainda não tinha conseguido visualmente, pelo menos com aquela nitidez. M33 foi apenas razoável. Quanto a planetas, pelo meio da noite, tínhamos feito uma visita a Neptuno e a Urano. Para o fim da noite foi a vez de Marte. Bem detectável a calote polar e algum detalhe na superfície. Marte promete. By nightfall he offered a wide variety of dishes, dainty bits and sweet desserts for full satisfaction of the most demanding gastronomic fantasies of anyone present. If someone did not believe in the legend of the cornucopia, certainly changed his mind tonught. We had the chance to test the Sky Quality Meter of Luís Carreira; it forwarded a very good reading of 20,85 near the zenith. In the near future we will try to measure the sky in different locations and, who knows, to call the attention of responsible post holders to the problem of light pollution. Another highlight was a \\\"semi-astronomical\\\" chair kindly forgotten at the middle of the observing site that permitted some breathtaking binocular observations. The observation report bellow was made by Alberto and reflects accurately,in the 1st person, one more meeting of the most active observing astronomical group in Portugal. -------- Saturday, most of the usual attendants of Atalaia, headed to Vale da Lama, Alpiarça, with the goal of enjoying an almost unpolluted sky in a New Moon weekend. And it wae woth the try, with a sky of magnitude 6 all around. We arrived early, in full daylight. With all equipments set up, it was the time for a dinner that Francisco, celebrating his 50th anniversary, in the company of his wife and children, offered to all of us. Then there was a long night of observations. After the inevitable visit to some globular and open clusters, it was the turn of some more difficult targets. The Veil Nebula, with a 31mm Nagler and an UHC filter, was stunning in detail, be it the western or the eastern segments. Even the central segment was easily observed. The California Nebula has been much more difficult, but we managed to see it. With the 31mm and the Hbeta filter only a portion of it was in the field of view. Then we tried with a 75mm Clavé of Alfonso. We had no 2\\\" Hbeta filter. So we used the 1.25\\\" in front of the eyepieces with excellent results. The Eagle Nebula was very clear with the 31mm and UHC filter. M17, the Swan Nebula, with the same set up was superb, but, with a 22mm and an O-III filter gained in contrast and detail. Then I ran across the Messiers of Aquarius and found Luís Carreira exploring the constellation of Sculptor. I joined him. Here the hunt was for galaxies. And there was a lot of them: - NGC7507, NGC7513, IC5332 (this one very dim), NGC7713, NGC7755, NGC7793, NGC24, NGC55, NGC131, NGC134 (here we got also NGC131 in the field of view), NGC148, NGC150, NGC253 (the large galaxy in Sculptor overflowing the limits of the eyepiece), NGC254, NGC289, NGC288 (this one is a globular cluster where we could resolve some dozens of stars), NGC300, NGC439 and NGC613. After this, with Lyra away from the zenith, I changed my attention to M57. At magnifications of 700x, me and Alfonso have been able to see the central star several times, for relatively short periods, but longer than those more usual short bright flashes. Only by curiosity, we placed a 2.5mm eyepiece over a 2.5x powermate. Under a focal length of 4200mm, we had an amplification of 1680x. We had in the field of view only the inner edge of the ring. It was nice to see, even if not of much interest. But my biggest reward was the almost perfect guiding. In the menwhile, Taurus was relatively high. M1 was best without any filter, maybe because it wasn\\\'t yet high enough in the sky. The Pleiades were one of the highs of the night. With one Clavé of Alfonso (40mm) they fitted in the field of view and the nebulosity was clearly visible, what I had never managed, at least so neatly. M33 was just reasonable. As for the planets, along the night, we had visited Neptune and Uranus. By the end of the night it came the turn of Mars. Easily detected a polar cap and some detail over the surface. Mars looks very promising. I know that objects are forgitten in this report.
