Sábado na Atalaia Saturday in Atalaia Apesar de a meteorologia nem sempre ser benevolente para a observação astronómica, nas noites de fim de semana lá vão afluindo à Atalaia alguns observadores do céu com muita, alguma e pouca experiência. O local, para bem da astronomia amadora do país está, realmente, a tornar-se uma referência. Só com uns binóculos 12x50, prevendo ser o único visitante do local que, possivelmente, não ficaria lá mais de 15 minutos, pensando que o tempo e a disposição se agudizariam, foi com muita satisfação que lá encontrei o Mário Santiago e um amigo, o Jorge de Almeida, o Guilherme de Almeida, o Pedro Ré, quatro estudantes do Instituto Superior Técnico e outros cinco novos observadores na Atalaia, cujos nomes desconheço. O Mário Santiago e o seu Maksutov de 7", ao oferecerem-nos um excelente bolo rei, um espirituoso vinho abafado e um espectacular Saturno amplificado até 706 X, proporcionaram-nos, sem dúvida, os pontos mais altos da noite. Obrigado Mário. Afinal, ao contrário do que previ, a noite manteve-se estável, com poucos nevoeiro e turbulência atmosférica, permitindo-nos, apesar do frio gélido, conviver e observar durante algumas horas os objectos possíveis. Os objectos observados com binóculos e telescópios, além do já referido Saturno (amplificado até 706X c/pouca perda de contraste e c/a divisão de Cassini muito evidente) e de outros, foram: M3, M31, M35, M37, M36, M38, M41, M42, M44, M45, M46, M47, M78, M81, M82, M93, M96, M101, M34, NGC 884, NGC869, Mel25 e algumas estrelas duplas e múltiplas. Finalmente, para quem gosta de observar o céu, convívio salutar e algum frio (mais no inverno!!!), uma viagem à Atalaia vale sempre a pena. The place, for the good of amateur astronomy in our country, is, indeed, becoming a reference. With only the 12x50 binoculars, and foreseeing to be the only visitor of the place, that, possibly, would not stay there for more than 15 minutes, and thinking that the weather would get worse and my will would vanish, it was with great satisfaction that I found at Atalaia Mário Santiago and a friend, Jorge de Almeida, Guilherme de Almeida, Pedro Ré, four students of the Instituto Superior Técnico, and five new observers , whose names I am unaware of. Mário Santiago with his 7" Maksutov, offered us an excellent "bolo rei" (the king of the cakes), a witty sultry wine and a spectacular Saturn amplified up to 706 X, these beeing, without any doubt, the highest points of the night. Thank you, Mário. After all, opposing my forecast, the night remained stable, with little fog or atmospheric turbulence, permitting, despite the freezing cold, to socialize and to observe for a few hours the possible objects . The objects observed in binoculars and telescopes, beyond Saturn (amplified until 706X with few loss of contrast and with a very clear Cassini division,) were: M3, M31, M35, M37, M36, M38, M41, M42, M44, M45, M46, M47, M78, M81, M82, M93, M96, M101, M34, NGC 884, NGC869, Mel25 and some double and multiple stars.
